Fair Housing Education Opportunities
April is Fair Housing Month – a great time for REALTORS® to brush up fair housing practices and laws! Below are several opportunities throughout the month to take advantage of classes that are being offered and throughout the state.
At Home with Diversity – NAR Certification Course
The At Home With Diversity Course teaches REALTORS how to:
- Assess and understand attributes of diversity in local markets and their impact on the real estate industry
- Understand basic competencies to earn the confidence of potential buyers and sellers, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, handicaps, familial status, or national origin
- Build a business plan that minimizes risk and successfully services all types of clients

GAR Partners in Education Classes
Sit. Stay. Obey: Service Animals and the Law
Instructor Tina Vliet – 3 hours CE
This course dives into federal and state fair housing laws, the similarities and differences they share, and how disabled Georgians and their service animals can exercise their rights under them. You’ll learn the difference between service and emotional support/comfort animals, how each is treated under fair housing laws, and what questions property owners may and may not ask related to disabilities and service animals. This course provides both Real Estate Licensee CE credit and Real Estate Instructor CE credit. This course also satisfies the GREC real estate license law education requirement.

Challenges of Stinkin’ Thinkin’ – Fair Housing

This class is to ensure that students understand Fair Housing and its impact on communities and individuals. Fair Housing Law establishes equal treatment for everyone as the standard. Social stigmas, personal biases, and stereotypes can affect the way we do business subconsciously. The perception of biased treatment will lead to trouble, while sensitivity to diverse cultures leads to inclusion which increases the quality of LIFE FOR ALL in the community! This class satisfies one of the Core Standards requirements under Section 3 – Consumer Outreach.

Bias Override: Overcoming Barriers to Fair Housing
Instructors Dr. Cynthia Davis and Maura Neill – 3 Hours CE
This course helps real estate professionals interrupt stereotypical thinking to avoid fair housing pitfalls and provide equal professional service to every customer or client. You will examine the history of bias in real estate, learn about the mind science of identity, study how implicit bias can result in fair housing violations, and engage in interactive exercises to enhance communication skills and business relationships with clients of all backgrounds.
