Georgia REALTORS® Supports Governor Kemp in Prioritizing Tort Reform for Georgia

ATLANTA, Jan. 22, 2025 – The Georgia REALTORS® (GAR), the largest and leading professional association for real estate agents in the state, today expressed strong support for Governor Brian Kemp’s commitment to prioritize tort reform during the 2025 legislative session. During his State of the State address, Governor Kemp emphasized the critical importance of addressing legal system abuses that currently burden Georgia’s businesses, drive up costs for families, and impede economic development throughout the state.

“Governor Kemp’s focus on tort reform demonstrates his understanding of how excessive litigation affects Georgia’s real estate market and overall economy,” said Stephen P. Walker, 2025 President of GAR. “Reform will help create a better business environment and make homeownership more attainable for Georgia families.”

Brad Mock, CEO of GAR, continued, “Georgia’s unbalanced legal system is driving up costs for consumers and creating uncertainty for property owners. Recent court rulings have expanded landowner liability, threatening affordability and stability. Georgia REALTORS® strongly support Governor Kemp’s leadership in pursuing legal reforms that protect consumers and ensure Georgia remains the best place to live, work, and do business.”

Georgia currently faces one of the most challenging legal environments in the nation. Excessive litigation has led to escalating insurance premiums and hampered economic growth across the state. Recent studies indicate that unchecked legal system abuses result in millions of dollars in annual costs to businesses, creating substantial financial burdens for Georgia families and deterring potential investment in local communities.

Nakia Brooks, Vice President of Governmental Affairs for GAR, added, “The current legal climate in Georgia poses significant challenges for property owners and real estate professionals alike. Meaningful tort reform will help reduce insurance costs and create a more stable environment for real estate transactions across our state.”

Georgia REALTORS® will continue to work closely with state leadership and stakeholders to support meaningful tort reform that promotes a fair and efficient legal system while fostering economic growth across Georgia.

The Georgia REALTORS® (also referred to as “Georgia Association of REALTORS®”) is a voluntary professional association of approximately 48,000 licensed real estate brokers and salespersons engaged in all aspects of the real estate business throughout Georgia. GAR is the leading advocate for the real estate industry in Georgia, committed to protecting private property rights and free enterprise, maintaining ethical and professional standards, and enhancing the public’s awareness and confidence in REALTORS®.
